Nag Panchami is celebrated on the 5th day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan, across India. In 2024, it will be observed on Friday, August 9th. On this day, serpents are worshipped, and milk is offered to them. Snakes are highly respected in Hinduism, and their worship is particularly auspicious during the Shravan month. Lord Shiva holds snakes as ornaments around his neck, which is another reason for the reverence.
According to Hindu mythology, Sage Kashyapa, son of Lord Brahma, had four wives. One of them gave birth to the gods, another to demons, another to Garuda, and the fourth to the Nagas (serpents). This is one of the reasons for the worship of snakes, also known as Nagas. The most prominent among them is Shesha Naga, who has a thousand heads and serves as Lord Vishnu’s resting place. Other notable Nagas include Ananta, Vasuki, Padmanabha, Shankhpal, Takshaka, and Kaliya.

Rituals Performed on Nag Panchami Day:
On Nag Panchami, snakes are worshipped with great devotion, and prayers are offered. Fasting is observed in many parts of India. Devotees take offerings of milk and turmeric powder to temples for the idols of Nag Devta. It is believed that offering milk to snakes brings good fortune. In Bengal, women typically worship Mansa, the queen of snakes, and offer raw milk and green bananas. In some regions, snake charmers take snakes to temples and release them for worship. The day also includes fairs, music, dance, magic shows, and gymnastic acts.
