Why We Celebrate Govardhan Puja — The Divine Significance Behind the Festival
Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut Puja, is one of the most sacred festivals in Sanatan Dharma, celebrated the day after Diwali. This auspicious day marks Lord Krishna’s victory over Indra’s pride and reminds devotees of the eternal message — faith and devotion towards God protect us more than material power or arrogance.
“Govardhan Giridhari Krishna — the protector of devotees, the sustainer of the world.”.
The Divine Story of Govardhan Puja
According to Shreemad Bhagavad Purana, when the people of Vrindavan were preparing for a grand celebration in honor of Lord Indra, the God of rain, Lord Krishna questioned their devotion. He lovingly advised them to instead worship Govardhan Parvat (mountain), which nourishes and protects all living beings by providing food, herbs, and shelter.
Following Krishna’s advice, the villagers performed Govardhan Puja, offering food to the sacred mountain. Enraged, Indra unleashed torrential rains to punish the people. To protect his devotees, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger for seven days, giving refuge to all beings beneath it.
Realizing his mistake, Indra sought forgiveness, and since then, devotees celebrate this day as Govardhan Puja, symbolizing the triumph of humility, faith, and devotion over ego and pride.
The Rituals of Govardhan Puja
Annakut Preparation: Devotees prepare a variety of vegetarian dishes made from grains, sweets, and milk products — symbolizing gratitude for nature’s bounty.
Govardhan Parvat Symbol: A small mound of cow dung or clay is made to represent Govardhan Ji, decorated with flowers, tulsi leaves, and diyas.
Puja & Aarti: Devotees perform Govardhan Aarti and offer bhog (food) to the deity, followed by circumambulation (parikrama) of the symbolic mountain.
Cow Worship: Cows, considered sacred and dear to Lord Krishna, are worshipped and fed with devotion.
Spiritual Meaning
Govardhan Puja teaches us:
Faith in God protects all: Surrendering to divine will brings peace and safety.
Nature is sacred: Mountains, rivers, and cows deserve our respect and protection.
Humility conquers ego: Even the mightiest (Indra) must bow before pure devotion (Krishna).
Modern Relevance
In today’s fast-paced world, Govardhan Puja reminds us to stay grounded, grateful, and connected to nature. It’s not just a ritual — it’s a spiritual reminder that true wealth lies in simplicity, service, and devotion.
